It is May 15, 1963, 8:04 A.M. Launch vehicle MA-9, a Mercury-Atlas rocket, lifts off from Complex 14 carrying Spacecraft No. 20.
Astronaut L. Gordon Cooper is aboard, and his objective is a manned one-day mission in orbit. One day, ten hours later, the objective was achieved when Faith 7 splashed down after 22.5 orbits, bringing Project Mercury to a close.
