Liftoff of Vanguard TV-4 |
|
|
It is March 17, 1958 and Vanguard TV-4 (Test Vehicle) is launched from
Complex 18, Pad A. This is the third attempt (TV-2 and TV-3 failed) to orbit a
satellite and it is successful. The Vanguard I is a small (6.4 in.) 3.5 pound
satellite that carries two radio transmitters and a temperature sensor. It is
also the first solar-powered satellite. Though the Vanguard I's transmitters
fell silent in 1964, it remains in orbit to this day.
