Complex 31 missile silo |
 |
This is the missile silo at Complex 31. Complexes 31 and 32 were used to launch Minuteman
I, II, and III missiles in the 1960s and 70s. Each complex had a blockhouse and
two launch pads. Pads 31B and 32B were silos, while the "A" pads were
conventional. The first launch (a Minuteman I) took place from pad 31A on
February 1, 1961.
The
silo here at Complex 31B now holds debris from the explosion of the Challenger Space Shuttle. The large
concrete caps protect the contents from the elements, and from "souvenir hunters."
